Timetable Genie, a clash-free school timetable in 60 seconds | Dynamic Minds Group

The timetable that builds itself.

Describe your school once inside your own Google Sheet and press Generate. Every teacher in the right place, every class covered, substitutes ready when someone is absent, and the exam date sheet planned, all without touching a whiteboard again.

Sound familiar?

The timetable eats a week of your life. Every single year.

Whiteboards, sticky notes, twelve versions of the same spreadsheet, and it still breaks the day a teacher reminds you she cannot take period one on Mondays.

Four days at the whiteboard

Draft, erase, redraft. Half the vacation week goes into a grid that still needs “just one more change” before school opens.

The clash that surfaces in week one

A teacher shown in two classes at once, or a lab promised to two sections. Nobody catches it on paper; the corridor catches it on Monday.

The daily substitution scramble

Someone is absent almost every morning, and first period goes into hunting free teachers, while the same few names get burdened again and again.

Every change costs a weekend

A new teacher joins or one period moves, and the whole grid unravels. So reasonable requests get a “no”, because redoing it by hand is exhausting.

Built on real mathematics

Why a real solver, and not guesswork?

You have probably tried building the timetable by hand, or with a generic tool. It comes back confident, neat, and quietly wrong.

Manual and generic tools

Juggle cells long enough and it looks done, until one teacher lands in two rooms at once, the lab limit is forgotten, and Saturday quietly gets nine periods. Checking the output takes longer than making the timetable.

Timetable Genie

Runs a mathematical constraint solver, the same family of technology behind airline and exam scheduling. Every rule is enforced, not suggested: a clash is impossible by construction. If no valid timetable exists, it says so honestly and tells you the smallest fix.

From blank sheet to printed week

Describe your school once. Generate forever.

Everything happens inside one Google Sheet you own. A guided wizard collects your school in minutes, and the engine does the thinking.

I Describe

Working days, periods, classes, subjects, teachers and their limits, rooms and labs, and your rules. The wizard checks your data as you type.

II Generate

The solver searches millions of arrangements and returns one with zero clashes, in seconds for most schools.

III Print & share

Colour-coded views by class, teacher, room, subject, or the whole school, with a clean print tab and PDF or Excel download.

IV Cover absences

Pick a date, tick who is away, and choose each period’s substitute from a ranked list, with the fairest pick pre-selected. Assignments print on a duty sheet and are marked on the timetable itself.

Where others give up

Built for how schools
actually run.

Schools, colleges, universities, coaching institutes: the hard cases below are exactly where Timetable Genie was built to shine.

01 · Elective groups

Standard Maths and Applied Maths, same class, same period.

Give both subjects one Elective Band label and the class splits into groups running in parallel. If Commerce and Science Standard Maths students share one teacher, the engine seats them together in one room, automatically.

Others: one subject per class per period, no exceptions.

02 · Substitute planner

The 7 a.m. scramble becomes a 30 second job.

Tick who is away, and every affected period gets the fairest free substitute, preferring same-subject teachers and the lightest day, with a printable duty sheet and a running history.

Others: the timetable ends where absences begin.

03 · Real school weeks

Short Saturdays, Sun-Thu weeks, your timings.

Any working days, your own period times, and days that differ, like a Saturday with 4 shorter periods. The generator, every view, and substitution planning all follow the real shape of your week.

Others: one rigid week pattern for every school.

04 · Exam date sheets

The whole exam schedule, planned in minutes.

Pick each grade’s papers and study gaps, and get a print-ready date sheet where primary finishes early, seniors get longer papers, and no exam ever lands on a holiday or vacation. Rebuild it in one click when plans change.

Others: the date sheet is still a separate spreadsheet fight.

05 · Exam seating & invigilators

Room charts and invigilator duty, from the same date sheet.

Turn any saved exam into seating in one press: rooms filled to your seat plan, roll numbers auto-ranged per section, mixed seating optional, and an invigilator assigned to every occupied room, automatically skipping anyone who teaches that class or sits that day's paper. Every duty stays one click away from a swap. Prints as a Room Chart and a Class Notice.

Others: seating and duty charts are drawn up separately, by hand, every single time.

Built for real schools

Everything a timetable coordinator actually needs.

Zero clashes, guaranteed

No teacher, class, or special room double-booked. Daily limits, unavailability, and fixed slots like assembly all respected.

Six live views

By class, grade, teacher, room, subject, or the whole school. Weekly or monthly, with a clean print tab beside it.

Teacher duties shown

Survey duty, admin slots, exam supervision: blocked periods print on the teacher's grid with their reason, and never get scheduled over.

Six saved reports

Teacher workload, free-teacher matrix, room utilisation, subject spread, a master pack of every class, and cover history.

Your data stays yours

Everything lives in your Google Sheet and your Google account. No account with us, no data on our servers.

Regenerate fearlessly

A change is one click, not one weekend. Explore a fresh arrangement any time; nothing else in your sheet is touched.

Substitute planner

Tick who is away; every affected period gets a ranked list of free substitutes with the fairest pre-selected. Preview any teacher’s day, assign, print the duty sheet, and see it marked on the timetable.

Exam date sheets

Per-grade papers, dates, and exam times; drag to order, auto-fill with study gaps, and print a combined date sheet that skips every holiday and vacation.

Exam seating & invigilators

One press turns a date sheet into a room chart: seats filled to your plan, roll numbers auto-ranged, invigilators auto-assigned per room, and a printable Room Chart and Class Notice ready to post.

Viewer inside the wizard

Browse the timetable by class, teacher, or room without leaving the setup window, and choose what printed cells show: teacher names, room numbers, full subject names.

Backup & transfer

Export your entire setup as one file. Roll it into next year’s sheet, or hand it to another coordinator, and import in two clicks.

"Every school or college runs on a timetable, but building one is still a manual allotment, stitched together by hand and prone to clashes. We knew a solver could finish it in seconds, removing the flaws along with it, so we built one."

Good to know

Frequently asked.

The goal: you should never need to email us to understand the product. If something is missing, we still love hearing from you.

Yes, genuinely free: install, generate, print, cover planning, exam planning, reports, all of it. Timetable Genie is part of TeachOS, the suite of school tools from Dynamic Minds Group, an organisation that has trained thousands of educators worldwide. We keep it free because giving coordinators their time back is the mission, not the transaction. There is no locked tier inside the add-on today.

Five, and each has one job. See and edit the current spreadsheet only: the add-on reads your setup and writes timetable tabs in the one sheet where you run it; it cannot see any other file in your Drive. Show a dialog: that is the setup wizard window itself. Connect to an external service: used only if a very large school is routed to our advanced solving engine for a few seconds; most schools solve entirely inside your sheet. Your name and email: read once, at activation, to pre-fill the consent dialog so you can review them before agreeing; stored only if you agree, never read again.

In your own Google Sheet and your own Google account. We run no database of your data, and uninstalling leaves your sheet and everything in it with you.

No. The timetable needs classes, subjects, teachers, and rooms. Teacher names are whatever you choose to type; many schools use initials. No student data is required at all.

Small and medium schools, roughly up to 15 sections, solve instantly inside your sheet. Larger schools, tested up to a full 72-class school from grades 1 to 12 with six sections per grade, are automatically routed to our advanced engine and come back solved in a few seconds. You do not choose an engine; it just works.

Yes. You tick your working days: Sunday to Thursday, Monday to Saturday, any combination. Periods, timings, and breaks are yours to define.

Yes, this is a headline feature. Give both subjects the same Elective Band label and they run in the same periods with different teachers, so the class splits into groups. If the Standard Maths students of Commerce and Science sit together with one teacher, assign that same teacher in both classes: the engine detects it and books one combined lesson in one room.

Open the Substitute planner, pick the date, and tick everyone who is away or on other duty: sick leave, survey teams, exam duty, anything. For each affected period it suggests the fairest free substitute, preferring same-subject teachers and the lightest day, flags any period where no one is free, and writes a printable duty sheet. Every plan is logged for a one-click history report.

Add it as Teacher Unavailability with a reason, for example "Admin duty". The engine never schedules over it, the reason prints on that teacher's timetable, and the substitute finder knows they are not free.

It tells you honestly, before wasting your time, and points at the smallest fix: add a period or a day, ease a teacher's daily limit, add a room of a needed type, or trim the curriculum. A built-in checker also flags problems while you are still entering data.

Yes. Reopen the wizard, change anything, save, and generate again. Each run explores a fresh arrangement. Fixed slots let you pin anything that must never move.

It creates and manages its own tabs, and touches nothing else. Your other tabs are ignored entirely.

Yes. Course strands with different teachers, shared IT labs balanced across groups, academic advisor lines on printed timetables, and Sunday to Thursday weeks were all built against a real university foundation program's timetables.

Remove it like any Workspace add-on: Extensions, Add-ons, Manage add-ons, Uninstall. Your spreadsheet and every tab in it stay exactly as they are, because everything was always in your file, not ours.

Email dmg@dynamicmindsgroup.com and a human replies. The add-on also has a Help item in its menu with quick answers.

Yes. Tick each grade’s papers, drag them into order, and auto-fill dates with your chosen study gaps, then adjust any single paper for uneven gaps. Every grade gets its own dates and exam times, holidays and vacations are skipped automatically, and a print-ready Exam Date Sheet tab is written into your sheet.

Yes. Open Seating on any saved date sheet and it fills your chosen rooms, roll numbers auto-ranged per section (no student names anywhere), with mixed seating optional. An invigilator is auto-assigned to every occupied room for every exam day, skipping by default anyone who teaches a seated class or that day’s paper; change any duty from a dropdown. It prints as a Room Chart and a Class Notice, ready to post outside each room.

Yes. Backup & transfer exports your whole setup, classes, teachers, curriculum, rules, holidays, as one file. Import it into a fresh sheet for the new session, or send it to another coordinator; they get your complete setup ready to adjust and generate.

Privacy & data

Your school's data stays in your Google account.

Timetable Genie is designed so that your data never needs to leave your spreadsheet.

Timetable Genie's use of raw or derived user data received from Google Workspace™ APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

The short version: your school's data lives in your own Google Sheets™ spreadsheet, inside your own Google account. The add-on can only touch the one spreadsheet you run it in, never the rest of your Drive. No student personal data is needed. Nothing is sold, shared, or used for advertising. Large schools' solve requests are processed in memory by our scheduling service and never stored.

  • Five narrow permissions: the current spreadsheet only, the wizard dialog, one external call to the optional solving engine, and your name and email, read once to pre-fill the activation consent dialog.
  • Consent first: your name and email are stored only if you agree on the one-time activation screen; declining stores nothing personal.
  • You are in control: delete the tabs, delete the sheet, or uninstall anytime, and the data goes with it.
